A community-driven art project emphasizes hope and inclusion.

Visitors to Getaway Youth Centre in Coquitlam will now be greeted by a vibrant new mural titled ‘There is Always Good in the World.’ This artwork is a result of collaboration between local youth and the City of Coquitlam, in partnership with United Way BC.

The mural is part of Coquitlam’s Streetscape Enhancement Program’s Mural Project, aimed at beautifying the community and fostering connections. Local artist Laura Kwok guided the design process during an engagement session, where over 30 young residents contributed ideas. Their collective vision highlights a healthy, caring, and inclusive community.

In early November, Kwok, alongside youth, city officials, and United Way BC’s South Coquitlam Hi Neighbour initiative, turned these ideas into the vibrant mural. This collaborative event provided participants with hands-on experience in creating public art.

Aligning with Coquitlam’s Youth Strategy, this project underscores the importance of providing accessible opportunities for the city’s youth. Through initiatives like this, young people are empowered to express themselves creatively and take on leadership roles in shaping their community.

Coquitlam offers numerous programs and services for youth, including recreational activities, volunteer opportunities, and events designed to cultivate a sense of belonging and collaboration.

United Way BC supports community health and inclusivity across various regions, focusing on urgent response, child and youth support, senior care, poverty alleviation, mental health, and food security. The organization serves a population of over 4.5 million people.

Laura Kwok is known for her whimsical and joyful artistry, heavily inspired by nature. Her murals adorn numerous locations across British Columbia, and she aims to foster community connections through her work.
