Coquitlam advises residents to brace for strong winds, heavy rain amid weather alert.

Coquitlam residents are urged to prepare for strong winds and heavy rain expected Wednesday, as Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement.

Potential impacts of the weather may include downed power lines and power outages, as well as localized flooding. The city recommends securing items that could blow away, preparing an emergency plan and kit, and keeping catch basins and gutters clear of debris.

In anticipation of the storm, Coquitlam is already taking measures such as clearing critical catch basins, sweeping debris from roads, and ensuring watercourse capacity is maximized. Crews will be on standby throughout the event to address any emerging situations.

Residents should be cautious of fallen trees and postpone activities in forested parks or areas with steep slopes, as landslide risks may increase. Motorists should watch for fallen branches and avoid driving through pooled water.

To report storm damage on city property, contact Coquitlam Parks & Facilities Customer Service. For debris on roads, reach out to the City’s Engineering Customer Service. Power outages and hazards can be reported to BC Hydro.

To report emergency drainage issues, Coquitlam residents can contact the Engineering and Public Works line, which is monitored 24/7 for incidents.

Coquitlam acknowledges with gratitude the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm, meaning ‘Red Fish Up the River,’ reflecting the city’s location on traditional and ancestral lands.
