New murals, street furniture, and lighting planned through 2025 to beautify Coquitlam

Coquitlam’s Streetscape Enhancement Program introduced colorful murals, unique bike racks, twinkling lights, and functional seating to city streets in 2024, with further additions scheduled in the coming months.

Launched in 2023, the program aims to improve streets and public spaces using public art and amenities. Street furniture, captivating murals, and decorative lighting promote community connections, outdoor living, tourism, economic development, and street safety.

Visitors and residents will notice new murals across the community, adding color, connection, and pride of place.

The ‘Ancestral Legacy’ mural at Town Centre Park Community Centre was designed by a multi-generational kʷikʷəƛ̓əm team, led by the Raven-Tacuara Collective.

‘Paperback Dream’ at the Coquitlam Public Library celebrates imagination through reading, designed by Carolyn Wong.

‘There is Always Good in the World’ outside Getaway Youth Centre was a result of a partnership with United Way British Columbia’s Hi Neighbour local initiative.

A new mural is planned for the SoCo Development at 308 Alderson Avenue, viewable from nearby areas, with painting to start in spring.

New bike racks and benches have been installed, spelling ‘EXPLORE’ at the Coquitlam Public Library and ‘RIDE’ at the Burquitlam SkyTrain Station.

‘Flora Lounge’ benches on High Street and ‘The Heights’ benches on Austin Avenue are part of these additions.

Ornamental tree lighting in City Centre has been expanded, enhancing visibility and safety during darker months.

Sites like Coquitlam Public Library and Hobbis Way will feature combined murals, street furniture, and plantings to enhance public spaces by spring 2025.

Public art walking tours and pop-up performances are planned in these newly enhanced spaces.
