Simple precautions can prevent devastating burn injuries.

National Burn Awareness Week is set to take place from February 2 to February 8, and Coquitlam Fire/Rescue is urging residents to be vigilant in preventing burns.

Hot liquids, such as bath water, hot coffee, and microwaved soup, remain the second leading cause of burn injuries, despite being preventable. Residents are encouraged to follow these guidelines to reduce the risk.

When using a two-handled faucet, turn cold water on first before adding hot water. Reverse this procedure when turning the water off.

Ensure bath water is warm, not hot, before placing a child or yourself in it by testing it with your hand, wrist, and forearm.

Always supervise children in or near bathtubs.

Establish a kid-free zone of at least 1 meter around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or served.

Avoid holding children while cooking, drinking hot liquids, or handling hot foods.

Opt for prepackaged soups with wide bases to prevent spills, and transfer the soup to a traditional bowl after heating.

Open microwaved food with caution, and allow it to cool before eating.

Do not heat baby bottles in the microwave; instead, warm them in water from the tap.

In the event of a burn, treat it immediately by running cool water over it for 3 to 5 minutes and cover with a clean, dry cloth. Seek medical help if needed.
