City outlines a plan to enhance sports field facilities over the next decade.
Coquitlam has unveiled a draft Sports Field Strategy aimed at improving sports field facilities and access over the next ten years. This builds upon past achievements detailed in the 2013 – 2023 Sports Field Strategy, which resulted in significant developments, including the renewal of artificial turf fields and the addition of new fields in the city.
The previous strategy led to the investment in a range of sports fields across the community, fulfilling plans that included the renewal and addition of both artificial and grass fields. Notable advancements saw the completion of five artificial turf fields, the creation of new fields at Town Centre North and Centennial, as well as improvements at Mackin North and Hartley.
The new draft Strategy utilizes local trends, benchmarks against other communities, and feedback from public surveys to ensure comprehensive representation of community priorities. This methodology aims to optimize the use of Coquitlam’s sports fields.
Funding remains essential to the maintenance and development of these facilities. A proposed hourly rental fee for artificial turf field use is intended to bridge funding gaps while ensuring grass and gravel fields remain free for non-profit youth groups. This approach aligns with practices seen in other municipalities within the region.
The draft 2025 – 2035 Sports Field Strategy sets out key objectives like sustaining quality infrastructure, ensuring equitable access, and fostering collaborations. These objectives will guide future decision-making in management and investment strategies for the city’s sports fields.
Further consultations with the Sports and Recreation Advisory Committee and field user groups are pending. Feedback from these discussions will inform refinements before presenting the Strategy to City Council for adoption.
