Local students participate in condensed fire service training during spring break.

A dozen local youth from School District 43 will spend their spring break in Coquitlam’s Junior Firefighter program, undergoing a condensed version of basic firefighter training.

Junior Firefighters participate in a week of intensive activities, from March 14 to 21, at Coquitlam Fire Training Centre, using the same facilities as regular firefighters. In its seventh year, the program offers a brief version of the typical eight-week training, familiarizing students with vehicles, equipment, and various emergency tasks.

Participants will engage in activities including fire extinguisher use, ladder climbs, emergency scene assessment, basic first aid, CPR, hose and nozzle drills, auto extrication, and public service.

Provided in partnership with School District 43, the program selects Grade 11 and 12 students through a competitive application process, including fitness assessments and personal interviews. The initiative offers prospective fire service candidates exposure to firefighter training and promotes community service, teamwork, and camaraderie.

The program also plays a crucial role in Coquitlam Fire/Rescue’s recruitment and community outreach strategies, encouraging applications from diverse backgrounds. More information on the program is available at coquitlam.ca/JuniorFirefighter.

Since its inception, 70 youth have graduated from the program, with Fire/Rescue looking forward to welcoming some past participants into their formal recruitment processes.

The 2025 Junior Firefighter Program is financially supported by local businesses through the City’s Corporate Partners program, including companies like Associated Fire Safety Group Inc. and BA Blackwell.

The Corporate Partners program, initiated in 2014, strengthens ties with local businesses and generates revenue for city events and services. It offers partners various marketing opportunities, public exposure, and fosters positive community relationships. Details are available at coquitlam.ca/CorporatePartners.
