City residents can utilize free curbside yard waste collection from April 14 to May 23.
Coquitlam residents engaging in spring cleanup can benefit from free extra curbside yard waste pickup from April 14 to May 23, coinciding with their regular collection day.
The Seasonal Unlimited Yard Trimmings program, available twice a year, provides residents with a convenient method to manage seasonal green waste such as grass clippings, weeds, leaves, and pruned branches. This initiative supports sustainable waste management practices while maintaining tidy yards, with an average annual collection of 461 tonnes.
Residents can prepare yard trimmings by placing them in Green Carts, old garbage cans with a Yard Trimmings sticker, kraft paper bags, or bundled. Yard Trimmings stickers can be picked up for free at several locations including Coquitlam City Hall and public libraries.
To facilitate collection, extra yard waste should be placed at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on collection days. A separate truck collects the additional yard trimmings, potentially at different times from Green Carts, and may continue up to 7:30 p.m.
Guidelines require bundled branches to be less than 1 meter in length and branch diameter to be under 7.5 centimeters. Individual items should not exceed 20 kilograms. Prohibited items include sod, rocks, soil, and plastic bags. Food scraps are to be placed only in City-issued Green Carts.
For those unable to participate in the curbside program, the United Boulevard Recycling & Waste Centre permits year-round free drop-off of yard waste with proof of residency. Accepted items include grass clippings, leaves, plant cuttings, tree and hedge prunings, and food waste.
Residents are encouraged to visit coquitlam.ca/ReCollect to set up collection reminders via email or phone. A smartphone app is also available for free download by searching ‘Coquitlam Curbside Collection’ in app stores.
