City’s dedication to inclusive facilities earns prestigious awards.
The City of Coquitlam has been awarded two gold certifications by the Rick Hansen Foundation in acknowledgment of its efforts to develop accessible and inclusive facilities.
Maillardville Community Centre and Town Centre Park Community Centre achieved gold ratings from the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ program, underscoring Coquitlam’s commitment to creating inclusive environments for all citizens.
Maillardville Community Centre, a 22,000 sq. ft. facility unveiled in 2022, was designed with universal accessibility in mind. Notable features include tactile indicators, braille signage, and wheelchair-accessible showers, among others.
The Town Centre Park Community Centre, remodeled and reopened in 2024, integrates accessibility in its design with features like power-operated door access and audio communication enhancement technologies.
Previously, Glen Pine Pavilion in Coquitlam received a gold certification from the foundation in 2023. Additional sites such as City Hall and Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex also have received certifications.
Coquitlam continues to focus on accessibility and inclusion, evident in its ongoing projects like the Northeast Community Centre in the Burke Mountain neighborhood and the development of its first Accessibility and Inclusion Plan.
The city works in collaboration with community members and organizations to ensure inclusive access to city services, emphasizing its dedication to support all residents.
