Council greenlights development of 158 affordable senior housing units.

Coquitlam Council has approved the Housing Agreement and Development Permit for two significant affordable housing projects, advancing new homes closer to construction.

The projects, in collaboration with operator S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and BC Housing, will provide 158 units of affordable rental housing for seniors at 290 Laval Square and 602 Sydney Avenue.

With senior-led households increasing in Coquitlam, the demand for affordable housing continues to rise. These developments will be located on City-owned sites in the Maillardville and Burquitlam-Lougheed neighborhoods.

The 290 Laval Square development features a three-story building with 42 rental units integrated with the Maillardville Community Centre plaza, while 602 Sydney Avenue will have a six-story building with 116 units.

Construction is expected to commence once funding and permit details are finalized, in partnership with BC Housing and S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

Coquitlam has made strides in addressing housing needs through proactive policies and partnerships. In 2023, the city partnered with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. for project development under a long-term lease.

This initiative aligns with Coquitlam’s Housing Affordability Strategy, adopted in 2015, and supported by the Affordable Housing Reserve Fund, which has aided over 872 housing units.

Coquitlam responds to provincial housing laws by implementing changes, such as boosting density in Transit-Oriented Areas and updating its Official Community Plan. The city has added over 7,400 homes since 2021.

The Housing Affordability Strategy remains a cornerstone for delivering varied housing options, regularly reviewed to meet evolving needs.
