City encourages residents to engage in recycling and reusing practices.

Coquitlam is marking Circular Economy Month by encouraging residents and businesses to engage in waste reduction through practices of reusing and recycling.

A circular economy differs from a linear economy by designing products for their entire life cycle, allowing materials to be recovered and reused instead of being discarded. This approach necessitates manufacturers to create durable, repairable products while consumers support companies offering reuse, repair, and take-back programs.

Residents in Coquitlam can contribute to a circular economy by utilizing city programs focused on material recovery and giving items a second life. This includes choosing to repair over replacing items and ensuring that materials are recuperated whenever possible to reduce waste and protect the environment.

Key programs supporting this initiative include the Coquitlam Curbside Collection app, offering waste reduction tips and collection reminders, and the Waste Wizard, an online tool for proper item disposal. Residents can also utilize recycling facilities and participate in the Repair Café events held throughout the year.

Additional efforts include the City-Wide Garage Sale and Giveaway and a guide for donating locally. Furthermore, a large item pick-up service is available, with an expansion to include electronics from October 6.

For disposal guidance, residents can use the Waste Wizard tool or contact the city’s waste reduction services. The city provides comprehensive sorting and collection information online.
