Record rainfall leads to flooding and a tragic mudslide in Metro Vancouver.
This past weekend, the region experienced the first atmospheric river event of the season, resulting in record-breaking rainfall across Metro Vancouver, including Coquitlam, which faced flooding and road and park closures.
In Coquitlam, a devastating mudslide on Quarry Road claimed the life of a community member. The city extends deepest condolences to the loved ones of the deceased, expressing thoughts and support during this difficult time.
Compared to the November 2021 event, which brought 97 mm of rain in 24 hours, Coquitlam received over 254 mm this weekend, making it a major weather event, over 2.5 times worse than in 2021.
Coquitlam City Council recognizes the tireless efforts of city crews and Coquitlam RCMP who worked relentlessly, and in some cases around the clock, to mitigate the storm’s impacts.
Special thanks are extended to Canada Task Force 1, a Regional Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team, for their critical support, as well as Coquitlam Search and Rescue for their involvement in separate rescue operations and ongoing efforts to locate a missing hiker.
The community’s patience and understanding during this challenging event were vital, with public resources stretched to the limit. The collective response from city staff, emergency personnel, and residents was remarkable.
As the storm subsides and areas return to normal, the city will continue to assess the impacts and support those affected in the coming days.
