British Columbia residents encouraged to participate in the largest earthquake drill on October 16

Residents of British Columbia are encouraged to prepare for an earthquake by participating in The Great BC Shakeout drill set for Thursday, October 16 at 10:16 a.m. Schools, businesses, and families across the province will practice safety measures during an earthquake.

The drill, organized by the BC Earthquake Alliance Society, is the largest of its kind in the region. It offers opportunities to practice the ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’ protocol and helps residents prepare for earthquakes at home, school, office, or while traveling.

While more than 3,000 earthquakes occur annually in British Columbia, most are too small to be felt. However, the threat of a significant earthquake causing considerable damage remains real.

Prepared individuals are likely to experience fewer injuries and less damage, positioning themselves to be more self-sufficient as authorities work to restore services after a major disaster.

To participate, register at www.shakeoutbc.ca and download resources like sound effects for the drill and emergency preparation information. At 10:16 a.m. on October 16, practice the ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’ protocol.

After the drill, practice your plan for actions to take after the shaking stops. Visit coquitlam.ca/earthquake for more information on preparedness.

Creating a home emergency plan and maintaining an emergency kit with essentials like water, food, pet supplies, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit to last at least 72 hours is advised. Conduct a ‘hazard hunt’ to secure items that might fall during an earthquake.

Prepared BC, the Provincial Government’s program, provides resources and information to help residents and organizations prepare for and recover from emergencies.
