Coquitlam celebrates the return of salmon with free activities and learning at Hoy Creek Hatchery.
Coquitlam’s anticipated Salmon Come Home event is set to return, inviting visitors to Hoy Creek Hatchery for an educational and fun-filled day as the salmon return to their spawning grounds.
The event will take place on Sunday, October 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering a range of free activities and exhibits focusing on the salmon life cycle.
Attendees can tour the fish hatchery, observe returning salmon, and engage in interactive exhibits. Activities include a salmon dissection, storytelling about Canadian wildlife, live musical entertainment, and the Explore Nature Passport Contest with eco-friendly prizes.
In collaboration with community stewardship groups like the Hoy-Scott Watershed Society and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, visitors can participate in educational activities to deepen their understanding of local ecosystems.
Coquitlam residents are encouraged to visit during the fall to witness chum and Coho salmon returning to local streams. A scavenger hunt map is available online for self-guided exploration.
Residents can contribute to the protection of local waterways by participating in the City’s Adopt-a-Catch Basin program and ensuring safe disposal of hazardous waste, which can harm aquatic life.
For more information, visit the city’s website or contact the Water Conservation Coordinator.
